Over the 12-month period from October 2022 to October 2023, pet food sales in Italy grew by 14.9% in monetary terms across all sales channels. The turnover of the Italian pet food market exceeded €3 billion, while the sales volume remained stable, increasing by only 0.9%.
The primary driver of growth in this category was cat food. Canned products accounted for nearly one-third of the registered turnover, with dry food for dogs and cats also making up a significant portion of sales.
According to the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), consumer prices, including pet products, increased by an average of 5.7% in 2023 compared to 8.1% the previous year.
Data from the consulting firm Casaleggio Associati, which analyzed data from 6,082 e-commerce sites and 106 pet industry websites, showed that as of March 2024, the leading retailer in Italy remains the German online pet store Zooplus. In second place are the Italian pet store websites Arcaplanet and Isola dei Tesori, which have each risen one position compared to the previous year.
