Pet insurance: pomeranians and mongrel cats receive payouts more often

The pet store chain, veterinary centers, and grooming salons Four Paws have summarized the results of a partnership program on pet insurance, in collaboration with the insurance company Pulse. The project was launched in the spring of 2023. The insurance covers pet examinations at any clinic in Russia, including the Four Paws vet centers, as well as covering costs for medications, treatment, and hospitalization.

According to the experts from the pet store chain and Pulse, pet insurance is most popular among dog owners. The top three breeds are mixed-breeds, Welsh Corgis, and Jack Russells. However, the breeds that received the most insurance payouts due to injuries and health conditions were Pomeranians, Welsh Corgis, and French Bulldogs.

Among cats, families with mongrel cats most frequently took out insurance, followed by Scottish Folds. The third place is shared by Abyssinian cats and Don Sphynxes. Among feline breeds, the owners of mongrel cats, Maine Coons, and Abyssinian cats had to use insurance most often.

As explained by the veterinary expert of the Four Paws network, Artem Demin, some breeds may inherit genetic diseases and are more prone to injuries due to their characteristics. According to experts, the most common reason for using pet insurance is potential diseases, less frequently – unforeseen injuries.

The insurance amount depends on the pet’s predisposition to injuries and diseases, as well as the season. “For example, policies that cover insect bites are more often purchased in spring and summer. Unforeseen expenses, such as taxi costs to the veterinary clinic, are also popular,” said Pulse.

The most expensive insurance can cost a pet owner up to €72,96, including a maximum set of options from injuries to unforeseen expenses.

In practice, most pet owners spend no more than €7,07 on their pet insurance. This insurance includes protection against extra costs up to €336,73 in case of serious illness.

“Pet insurance, like any voluntary insurance, is primarily intended to save the client’s money and provide a sense of security. Pet treatment is expensive, and insurance helps cover most of these costs. Moreover, the online consultation service helps avoid unnecessary clinic visits or get recommendations on the urgency of a visit,” conclude Pulse experts.

The Pulse and Four Paws partnership program started in August 2023.
